York road to stay closed over Easter as investigations continue

York’s royal street is to stay shut over Easter as investigations into a fault continue.

As we reported last Thursday, a stretch of Micklegate was closed suddenly after a ‘void’ was discovered under the road.

Several stone setts were removed close to the junction with St Martin’s Lane.

The situation remains the same almost a week later. And it will be shut throughout the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Head of highway asset management at City of York Council Steve Wragg explained what was happening.

“Late last week, our teams discovered the void on Micklegate following a routine maintenance check.

“Businesses and pavements remain open although we have had to close the affected part of the road to vehicles.

“Pedestrians, mobility aid users and cyclists can still access and the street is still very much open for business.

“The road closure does mean that vehicle deliveries to premises on the whole of Micklegate will need to come in from either end, turn, and exit the way they came; we are sorry for the disruption this will cause.

“We aim to keep disruption to a minimum and are undertaking a thorough investigation of the void and what’s caused it, before we can decide on the best way to resolve it and then re-open the road.

“This does mean that the road will have remain closed over the Bank Holiday”.
