Investigation underway after ‘sinkhole’ closes York road

A hole has opened in a main York road today (Thursday).

It is on Micklegate, close to the junction with St Martin’s Lane.

Several stone setts are out of place, revealing the void beneath.

Many people who work on the street arrived today to find the closure in place.

Safety barriers have been put up around the hole.

A City of York Council spokesperson said: “This morning our teams were inspecting Micklegate as part of our routine highways maintenance and discovered a void under the road.

“We’ve had to temporarily close the bottom of Micklegate to vehicles while we investigate, before the issue is fixed.

“All businesses are open as usual. Pavements are open to pedestrians and mobility aid users; cyclists can still use the route but signed diversions are in place for vehicle traffic.

“Thanks for everyone’s patience while we urgently investigate.”

This is another blow for Micklegate businesses. The top of the street was shut during the day for two weeks to enable sewer works at the new aparthotel being built there.

Those roadworks were lifted on Tuesday. Now much of the road is shut again, due to the sinkhole.

There is no timetable for when the road will reopen.
