Updated: York road reopens after incident involving cyclist and bus

A York road that was closed following an incident involving a cyclist has now reopened.

Walmgate was sealed off by police tape from its junction with Navigation Road to Walmgate Bar.

A number 8 First York bus was inside the cordon. It was on its way to Grimston Bar Park & Ride.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “A full road closure has been put in place on Walmgate in York while emergency services deal with an incident involving a cyclist which happened at around 2.20pm today (Wednesday).

“Motorists and pedestrians should avoid the area until further notice.”

Witnesses can make a report to North Yorkshire Police on 101, option 4, quoting NYP-24012024-0258.

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received an emergency call at 2.17pm on Wednesday afternoon to report a cyclist who had suffered a medical episode and collided with a vehicle on Walmgate, York.

“An ambulance and rapid response vehicle were dispatched to the scene and the patient was conveyed to York Hospital.”

A spokesperson for First York said: “We can confirm that a bus on our Service 8 route was involved in an incident with a cyclist at the junction of Walmgate and Navigation Road at 14:20 today.

“The emergency services attended and the cyclist has been taken to hospital for treatment.  

“Our driver is receiving support from the team and we have introduced diversions to Services 8, 10 and 67 while the road is closed to allow a police investigation.

“We will provide any assistance we can in helping establish the circumstances that led to this incident.

“Customers using these services are advised to check our social media and website for updates and we will inform everyone when the police confirm that the road has reopened and services are able to return to normal.”
