York Rescue Boat offer simple life saving advice during Drowning Prevention Week

Every year, lives are lost in the sea, lakes, canals and rivers in incidents that could have been prevented.

York Rescue Boat volunteers are called out to emergencies on the water throughout the year.

They cover the River Ouse and Foss in York but also get called to other incidents too. Rescuing people who have got into difficulties in the water is one of their main tasks.

They know that drowning can happen quickly, quietly, and to anyone – regardless of age or ability.

This week is Drowning Prevention Week.

York Rescue Boat is asking everyone to take a few moments to learn the simple steps that could save a life.

Stay clear of the water’s edge

Keep children close and under constant supervision near water.

Never enter the water to carry out a rescue yourself.

In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard at the coast and Fire and Rescue inland.

If you fall into the water unexpectedly, remember, Float to Live.

The most important thing you can do today? Share this story.

You never know who might see it, remember it, and use it when it matters most. Coxswain, Mark Mullen says: “Together, we can help prevent tragedies, raise awareness, and make our rivers, lakes, canals and coastlines safer for everyone.”

Mark will be talking more about this on the Sunday Late Show (Sunday 21 June) on YorkMix Radio at 10pm
