York history saved from demolition following building collapse

Two historic York buildings which were due to be demolished have been saved.

The former York Carriageworks canteen off Holgate Road partially collapsed in 2023.

Built in 1888 it had interesting architectural detailing, including oriel windows at either end.

Following the collapse, plans also went in to demolish Alliance House, another part of the historic Holgate Carriage Works complex.

Built as a centre for building new passenger carriages, Alliance House was opened in 1884 by the North Eastern Railway Company.

An application to demolish it was refused by City of York Council in 2024.

In the light of the threat to the buildings, York Civic Trust urged residents to help save the city’s heritage.

Now it has brought some good news for the city’s railway heritage.

In a Facebook post, York Civic Trust said: “Railway buildings saved from demolition!

“Following the partial collapse of the Canteen Building in 2023, initial proposals sought the demolition of both it and nearby Alliance House.

“After our objection and discussions with partners, the scheme has been carefully reworked.

“The approved plans now retain most of both locally listed buildings, with contemporary additions enabling their continued railway use.

“We’ve been working hard to save these buildings for years, and are delighted with this outcome.”
