York city centre shop to close – and launches sale

A York gift and homeware store is set to close this month.

Cello by Collectables, located at 4-5 Church Street, has announced it will be closing its doors on Sunday 22 February and launched its closing sale.

The shop is part of the Collectables brand, a family-run group of stores with its HQ in Gateshead, and offers a range of home decor and gifts from fragrance items, including burners, sprays and candle jars, to gift items like plushies, LED lamps, drinking flasks, key rings and jewellery.

Though the shop has announced it’s closing, it may not be the last time we see Cello by Collectables in the city – as the management are looking for another site for the store.

The sign on the front door window reads:

“It’s with much regret that we are closing this store on the 22nd of February. Management are currently looking for another property so we might see you again in the future.

Our nearest store is Collectables based in the Whiterose Shopping Centre Leeds. We wish to thank all our customers. Thank you, the York team.

Cello by Collectables opened in May 2023, replacing the former gaming shop GAME, which then was briefly changed to a branch of Utopia womenswear.

Last year, plans were submitted to City of York Council to turn 4-5 Church Street (and 26 Swinegate) into a restaurant.

A design statement from applicant and building owners St Bride’s White Rose LLP stating, they are “at an advanced stage of discussions which will see the ground floor units of 4-5 Church Street and 26 Swinegate converted to restaurant use and occupied by a prominent name in the UK’s dining scene”.

The planning application was approved in August 2025. It has not been announced yet which ‘prominent name’ is set to occupy the building.
