The lawsuit that’s been filed against York City FC could cost the club more than £4 million, it has been claimed.
As YorkMix exclusively revealed on Tuesday, former City owner Jason McGill is suing the current owners Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla for breach of contract.
The dispute dates back to Mr McGill selling his majority stake in the club in 2022, and revolves around loans he had previously made to the club.
The court documents remain sealed. But a report on the wrangle in The Times today says that Mr McGill is suing the club for up to £4.2 million.
However, YorkMix understands that this headline figure doesn’t tell the full story, which will only be revealed when the court documents are unsealed later this month.
The report in The Times says: “The Ugglas are hugely popular with York fans, having invested almost £6 million over the past two years as they pursue a return to the EFL.
“They are second in the National League, two points behind the leaders Rochdale, with only the champions earning automatic promotion.

“But the cost of this legal battle could be hugely damaging, with the Ugglas understood to be preparing a robust defence that involves a detailed review of the club’s finances.”
We asked York City if they recognise the figures in the report, but we’ve not yet heard back.
Mr McGill issued a statement earlier this week which said: “JM Packaging Ltd (JMP) confirms that its solicitors, Andrew Jackson of York, have commenced formal legal proceedings in the High Court for a substantial sum against York City Football Club Limited (the Club).
“The claim arises from JMP’s historical financial support of the Club.”
This was followed by a statement from the employees of York City FC, in which they threw their full support behind Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla, saying: “Through their relentless hard work, unwavering support, and significant personal investment, they have transformed the club’s fortunes both on and off the pitch.”
