Safe and Sound Homes (SASH) is calling on people in York to come forward and become hosts – as the charity expands its network to support more young people facing homelessness.
For 30 years, SASH has provided safe, accommodation for young people aged 16–25 who are in crisis, including those sofa surfing, fleeing unsafe situations, or at risk of sleeping rough.
Its trained hosts play a vital role by offering a spare room and a safe, welcoming home environment when it is needed most.
SASH provides safe accommodation through its Supported Lodgings network, matching young people with hosts who offer a stable and welcoming home environment. Alongside accommodation, young people receive dedicated one-to-one support to help them build independence and move towards long-term stability.
The charity ensures hosts are fully supported at every stage. This includes comprehensive training before they begin, ongoing support from experienced staff, and hosts are also matched carefully with young people to ensure suitability and safety for everyone involved.
Becoming a host offers a practical and meaningful way to make a direct difference in a young person’s life, providing safety, reassurance and a stepping stone towards longer-term independence.
Tiffany, host lead at SASH, said: “We are looking for people in York who can offer a spare room and a supportive home environment for young people in crisis. Our hosts are never alone in this role — we provide full training, ongoing guidance, and round-the-clock support so they feel confident and supported throughout.”
The impact of SASH can be seen in the experiences of those it supports.
Eden said: “I came to SASH after both my mum and dad sadly passed away and our family home had to be sold as part of probate. I loved my room at my host Helen’s house. It was really cosy and the bed was so comfortable.
“I’d never really had my own space before going to SASH, so I really appreciated having a room of my own. With the support of SASH, I now have my own place and have learned how to manage my money.”
Hosts remain at the heart of the charity’s work. Helen, who has hosted young people through SASH for 18 years, said: “What keeps me motivated to host after 18 years is knowing I can make a difference to a young person’s life.”
