One of the co-founders of the York charity, Restore, has been named in the King’s Birthday Honours List.
Barrie Stephenson has been awarded an MBE for services to people experiencing homelessness in York. He has been a trustee and director of the charity for the past 15 years; many of those years as Chair of the board.
Since its inception, Restore has helped over 475 people out of homelessness, many of them moving on to a home of their own, and the charity now routinely supports around 80 individuals at any one time.
Barrie said: “I am deeply humbled by this award. It is not just for me, it’s for everyone who has made Restore the success it is today.
“Restore has exceeded all my expectations and it is down to the dedicated staff and trustees who have given so much to bring this about.
“I may be the only person who has been with the charity from its inception but I have worked with so many others who should share this honour, especially Ed Hambleton, our co-founder, who gave up a secure job to pioneer Restore with me.
“Without their sacrificial work Restore would not be the highly respected and valued service for the relief of homelessness in the city of York. Most importantly it is – and always has been – a venture of faith.”
Barrie Stephenson remains a trustee, after recently handing over the role of Chair of Restore to Stephen Talboys, who joined the board in November 2025.
Stephens says, “I’m delighted for Barrie, and very pleased to take over the reins from his excellent stewardship of Restore and to be leading a great set of trustees and staff, that do such a great job for people experiencing homelessness in York.”
The day to day operation of Restore is in the hands of the Service Manager, Paddy Wordsworth and his dedicated staff team.
Paddy says, ” Barrie took a step of faith 15 years ago that has transformed countless lives. Through his perseverance, commitment and compassion, hundreds of people have found hope, support and a fresh start. York is a better city because of his work. I’m thrilled to hear that Barrie has been recognised for his dedication and service.”
Barrie Stephenson added: “As Christians, we feel called to this work and our success is due to the prayer and faith of the staff, trustees and many supporters.
“I am truly thankful to God and to all those who have walked with me in this calling. If there is an honour to be given for what Restore has achieved it ultimately belongs to Jesus Christ, whose life and love we receive daily to sustain us through good times and challenging days.”
