Why International Women’s Day is important – and how to mark it in York

International Women’s Day is recognised throughout the world and holds a great purpose.

Celebrated tomorrow, and every 8 March, the day is dedicated to raising awareness and educating our communities about female equality.

It is also an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women, drive gender parity, and fundraise towards impactful women’s charities.

The globally acknowledged day showcasing the ‘social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women’, began in 1911.

In that year, more than one million men and women attended IWD rallies across Europe. They campaigned for women’s rights to vote, work, to hold public office, be trained, and to end the discrimination.

Campaigners fought for women’s rights for decades before the United Nations officially recognised International Women’s Day in 1977, with countries such as China, Russia and Uganda turning it into a public holiday.

Everyone can get involved to celebrate the inspirational International Women’s Day, and plenty is going on in York.

Thanks to York International Women’s Week, there’s a huge variety of events on offer, from health self care workshops, creative hubs, poetry showcases and art exhibitions.

And please join us at the YorkMix International Women’s Day Networking Event at Impossible York in the Pink room from 3pm to 6pm. Find out more and join the guest list here.

You can see all the YIWW events for Friday and the weekend here.
