Police investigating an arson attack at Sandsend have today issued a description of a suspect.
Officers were dealing with an unrelated incident at around 9.40pm on Saturday (25 July) when they saw plumes of black smoke in the sky.
The fire was on the headland at Sandsend, between the beach and the A174, close to the golf course and the disused car park.
Fire crews put out the blaze. Investigations pointed to the fire being started deliberately.
Detectives have issued a description of a man they want to talk to.
He was wearing a burgundy-coloured top, accompanied by a black dog, getting into what has been described as a white pick-up truck or flatbed Transit-style van in the area around the time of the incident.
They want to hear from anyone who saw him.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We are also appealing for anyone who was travelling on the A174 near Sandsend at around that time and may have dashcam footage, or anyone who witnessed a person or vehicle matching the above description.
“Additionally, officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity involving two large tractor-style tyres in the area before the fire was discovered.”
