The Ebor Singers: A Ceremony of Carols

Few works capture the joy and wonder of Christmas as vividly as Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols. Composed in 1942 during Britten’s voyage home to England from the USA, this luminous eleven-movement work for upper voices and harp blends medieval texts with modern harmonies to create a sound world both intimate and radiant, and a timeless celebration of Christmas spirit. Alongside this, familiar carols are lovingly arranged in Vaughan Williams’ joyful Fantasia on Christmas Carols and Cecilia McDowall’s atmospheric A Winter’s Night, with pieces by Howells and York-based composer Richard Allain. Blending beauty, energy and reflection, this concert offers a rich tapestry of choral music to mark the festive season.
