Some Yorkshire Water customers in Easingwold, Tollerton and surrounding areas are still experiencing low water pressure after a pollution incident on the River Ouse, north of York.
At one point many properties were without a supply. It affected the YO61, YO30, and YO26 postcode areas.
The Environment Agency (EA) says it is investigating elevated ammonia levels in the river.
The higher than normal levels were the result of a “third-party pollution incident”, with the EA saying it had staff on site trying to work to establish the source.
Ammonia is an important industrial chemical, used in the production of fertilisers, plastics, synthetic fibres and pharmaceuticals.
High levels in water can kill or be otherwise harmful to fish, and humans, as well as affecting the taste and smell.
Yorkshire Water said once they identified the pollution in the raw supply, they immediately took steps to shut down the treatment works serving the area to protect water quality.
However that is now up and running again and a spokesperson said yesterday evening: “While we fill the system back up some customers might have lower water pressure in some places.
Yorkshire Water added: “We’re hopeful this will not be prolonged, but given the warm weather, we have taken the decision to set up bottled water stations. We are also delivering bottled water to customers on our Priority Services Register.
Yorkshire Water said it was sorry for the disruption, but it will keep everyone updated.
They have confirmed that no contaminated water has been released into the public water supply, so there is no risk to the public from the water they have been drinking.
