Watch: The Mystery Plays return to York

Residents and visitors enjoyed the colourful scenes in York today (Sunday 28 June) as the Mystery Plays took to the streets again.

Performances have been taking place in various venues all day. YorkMix was there to capture one in King’s Square.

Our video shows part of the The Crucifixion, Performed by York Settlement Community Players on behalf of The Company of Butchers. Directed by Maurice Crichton.

Thom Feeney plays Christ. He told YorkMix Radio: “I feel a certain sense of pride and a certain sense of weight on my shoulders, as well as the cross.”

He added that it was quite a demanding role physically: “There is a bit of lactic acid build up in my shoulders, but I think compared to the real chap himself, then I don’t have too much of a complaint.”

Forty-eight scripts make up the existing York Mystery Plays. For 2026, eleven core plays are being put on, plus further extracts to tell the story from The War in Heaven to Doomsday.

Produced by York Festival Trust, the 2026 production once again has seen medieval drama on the streets and historic spaces of the city, reconnecting modern York with a cycle of plays first performed by its medieval guilds.

The York Mystery Plays, streets of York, are back, July 5, 10.30am to 4.50pm; Sunset In The Shambles Market, June 30 and July 1, 7.45pm.
