Famous Scarborough shop that has traded for 181 years to close for good

Its been there since before the town’s Grand Hotel was built.

But now famous Scarborough shop John Wherritt is to close after 181 years.

It opened in 1845, six years after Queen Victoria came to the throne.

Another seven monarchs have followed, and all the while this Aladdin’s Cave on Eastborough has kept trading.

And it’s been in the same family the entire time.

Sisters Celia Wilson and Sharon Jackson now own Wherritt’s. They are retiring and putting the business up for sale – although not as a going concern.

Originally opened as a tobacconist by the sisters’ great uncle, the shop went on to sell souvenirs, soft toys, trinkets and all sorts of treats.

On Facebook, the sisters wrote: “WOW! After announcing our retirement and planned closing date, we’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the response.

“Your messages, memories and kind words have meant more to us than we can say.

“Our closing down sale has been so busy, we have decided to stay open for one extra week to give everyone the chance to pop in before we close our doors for the final time on Saturday 18th July.”

There’s now up to 50% off items, so you can say goodbye and grab a bargain at the same time.
