A post on the Westfield Ward Lib Dems Facebook page thanked those residents who had been in touch with Cllr Andrew Waller about the situation.

It said: “The Neighbourhood Enforcement Team are aware and will be taking the necessary legal action in response.

“The large concrete block is in place as the current entry point is via a section of the low fencing that has been removed and vehicles are driving over the verge.

“Cllr Waller has asked for a review of the fencing as there are funds available for parks and open spaces and this will put the playing fields out of action for a long time.”

Westfield Labour posted this update from the council’s community safety team on Facebook: “Following the reports to the council that Travellers have broken the gate and entered onto Chesney Fields, officers will be attending in the morning to assess, conduct the necessary checks, and serve directions to leave.”

Residents pointed out that the gate had not been damaged, but the field had been churned up by the vehicles. Police were seen there at 4.30pm yesterday (Tuesday).

The incident has prompted a mixed response from residents. One said: “They have got to live somewhere, leave them alone.”

Another wrote: “They’ll be gone in a week. Met two kids tonight and I’ve never came across more polite kids in my life.”

A third wrote: “They have broken the fence to gain access – criminal damage disgusting!”

And another commenter said: “Why did the police not stop it when they were in attendance instead of leaving to allow more damage etc?”
