Thunderstorms set to hit York and North Yorkshire this week – with potential for flooding

A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for thunderstorms later this week, affecting a large area of the country including York and North Yorkshire.

The warning comes into place at 6pm on Wednesday and runs through to 6am on Friday.

The Met Office says: “Some places are likely to see thunderstorms later Wednesday through to Friday with the potential for travel disruption and flooding.”

It says there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, “with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail and strong winds”.

It’s going to be a warm start to the week with temperatures climbing to 23ºC on Wednesday.

Temperatures will then drop back towards the end of the week.
