Thieves damage ‘beloved’ North Yorkshire station in £10,000 robbery

Two men have damaged a North Yorkshire heritage railway station in a £10,000 robbery.

It happened at around 8.50pm on Friday 23 January.

The men approached Pickering Station in a white car – believed to be a VW Tiguan – before scaling a gate and climbing onto a roof.

They then removed £10,000 worth of lead, causing at least £20,000 worth of damage in the process.

The pair later made off towards Scarborough on the A170.

British Transport Police officers have released these images and ask anyone who was in the area and may have seen or captured footage of the car or man pictured to contact police – details below.

Pickering is the main station of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR).

NYMR chief executive officer Laura Strangeway said: “We work very hard to bring our heritage railway to life for thousands of families who visit us each year and our volunteers give their time for free to make a magical day out for everyone.

“At a time when we have a cost of living crisis, it’s soul-destroying to have to try and rectify the damage these individuals have caused to our beloved Pickering Station’s roof.”
