Malton and Norton have been hit. “An extra Yorkshire Water pump is now operating in Castlegate and is having the desired effect of clearing water from the highway,” Norton Matters reported on Facebook.

“Please continue to drive slowly here as the pump takes effect.

“Ground water remains very high. The Derwent is now 4.37m but steady, therefore no closure of the bridge is expected right now.

“All available pumps are currently deployed, including an extra pump in Old Malton due to issues there. As and when possible, a pump will be moved into Morrisons, which is currently partially flooded.”

Firefighters were called to Castlegate twice today.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The Malton crew were called to assist with flooding in the area they had previously pumped water from, as there were reports that it had become worse and was threatening nearby buildings.

“Crews use a light portable pump to remove as much surface water as possible. This incident is still ongoing.”
