Today, officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team attended an address in Towton, near Tadcaster, on a rather unusual task.
Following ongoing work in the area, a human skeleton was discovered, believed to date back to the time of the historic Battle of Towton in 1461.
Officers went to the scene to assess the situation and ensure the appropriate processes were followed.
A spokesperson for the police said:
“We’d like to reassure the community that there is no risk to the public. Towton is an area of significant historical importance, and discoveries such as this, while rare, are not unexpected.”
A dedicated team of professional archaeologists has been working in the area since 1996, carefully restoring and preserving ancient bones and artefacts. They will now take the lead in examining the remains and ensuring they are treated with the care and respect they deserve.
Police said: “We’d like to thank retired Professor Tim and team for their insight into the historic battle.”
