Shop closes on historic York street – but owners say it’s not ‘goodbye forever’

A shop has closed on York’s historic Shambles.

But the owners have said something new will be coming to the location soon.

They have thanked their loyal customers, one of whom described the closure as an “absolute shame”.

Bao has operated at 43 Shambles – on the corner of Little Shambles – since 2021.

It served up themed and decorated bao buns filled with sweet and savoury fillings, as well as shakes and bubble tea.

Bao moved in after the previous occupants, Essence Of Peru, left the premises in 2020, blaming spiralling costs caused by Brexit.

Phoebe Lai and Suyin Chia first opened Meow on Goodramgate and then Bao on Shambles.

The Meow and Bao team also ran the food truck ‘Little Bubble Box’.

Bao has now shut, and the owners have shared a timelapse video of them taking out the fixtures and fittings.

In their message, they said: “Thank you for every visit, every conversation, and every bit of love you’ve shared with us. Your support has meant the world and made this space so special.

“But this isn’t goodbye forever, it’s just the start of something new.

“We’re transforming this space into a new art-filled adventure, and we can’t wait to share it with you soon.

“Stay tuned, a beautiful surprise is on its way.”

One customer responded: “Thank you too: loved each visit, the aroma and the soft bite… The cutest Bao shop, will be missed.”

Another wrote: “You were my go-to spot, absolute shame.”
