Police force entry into a car to rescue dog left in 30°C heat

Yesterday in Skipton (Friday 26 June), PC Sampson and PC Dale responded to a report from a concerned member of the public after a dog had been left in a car for over 30 minutes.

At the time temperatures had reached 30°C making the conditions inside the vehicle extremely dangerous and unsuitable for any animal.

Due to the immediate risk to the dog’s welfare, PC Sampson made the decision to force entry into the vehicle to get the dog out.

It was taken to a local vets where, thankfully, it was checked over and found to be safe and well. Strong words of advice were given to the owner regarding their actions.

In a statement, North Yorkshire Police said: “We would like to thank the member of the public who reported this – you helped protect this animal from serious harm.

“Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a car can rise rapidly. At 30°C outside, a car can become dangerously hot within minutes, risking heatstroke or death.

“Please remember:  Never leave a dog in a car during warm weather – even for a short time.

“Parking in the shade or leaving windows open does not keep the car safe.

“If in doubt, leave your dog at home where it is cool and comfortable”
