Widely regarded as one of the best craft beer destinations in the city, this iconic venue blends historic character with a bold, eccentric personality that keeps guests coming back for more.
Step inside and you’ll find three floors of wonderfully quirky rooms, each packed with intriguing objects and curiosities that make every visit feel like a new discovery. Whether you’re popping in for a casual drink, a bite to eat, or a full evening out, the atmosphere strikes that perfect balance between lively and laid-back.

Of course, the real star here, alongside the huge and ever-changing craft beer selection, is the food, From breakfast and brunch through to hearty meals, the kitchen delivers bold flavours and comforting favourites.
We visited to try their brand-new “killer” menu and it certainly lives up to the name. Inspired by infamous figures from history, the creatively themed sandwich selection is as fun as it is flavour-packed. A Standout for us was the ‘Bloodaxe’s Beef,’ a rich, slow-cooked beef ciabatta layered with horseradish cream, watercress and salsa verde, served with a pot of gravy for dipping.
The roast potatoes deserve a special mention too, served in indulgent portions, whether dusted with parmesan or coated in honey truffle mayo, and cooked to perfection in duck fat (with vegetarian options available). It's the little things that make the menu next leave pub grub.
Even younger diners can enjoy a playful kids menu inspired by classic “baddies,” adding a fun twist for families.
With private rooms available for hire, a buzzing atmosphere, and one of the most unique settings in York, The House of Trembling Madness offers something truly different.
