There’s a reminder about ongoing concerns at West Haddlesey Lock, near Selby.
North Yorkshire Police have received reports of young people entering the water and jumping from height into the active lock, which is managed by the Canal & River Trust.
It is NOT a safe or suitable place to swim. ![]()
There have also been reports of children becoming unwell after entering the water. Please be aware of symptoms such as:
• Diarrhoea
• Nausea or vomiting
• Flu-like symptoms
If your child has been in this water and shows any of the above, please seek appropriate medical advice.

Why is this dangerous?
• The lock is surrounded by hard stone walls – slips or impacts could result in serious or fatal injuries
• It is a working lock, where water levels and conditions can change suddenly without warning
• The area is privately managed, and unauthorised access may be considered trespassing

We understand the warm weather makes open water look more appealing, but locations like this can be extremely unpredictable and dangerous.
