The A59 closed at 7am between the Red Lion at Poppleton and a point west of the roads leading to Hessay but is now re-open, much to drivers’ relief. Traffic was sent for hours on a on a detour of more than 40 miles, all day.

Cars could use the B1224 York to Wetherby Road to avoid the closure, among other routes.
Cyclists were diverted along Marston Lane to the B1224 near Rufforth where they can take the off-road cycle path to Acomb.Poppleton Park and Ride was open but only for vehicles approaching along the York Outer Ring Road, not the A59.
