Raiders smash their way into York shop and set off cloaking device
Police are hunting two raiders who broke into a York shop earlier today (Wednesday).
Two men, one on a bike, the other on foot, approached the Vapes & Phones shop on Gillygate from the direction of Bootham at about 4.30am.
They then forced their way in, activating the alarm and the smoke cloak device, which fills the shop with a fog of vapour.
The man on foot is believed to have entered the shop before leaving empty handed. They then headed back towards Bootham.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Several vehicles went past the shop which may have disturbed the suspects.
“Our enquiries are ongoing to identify them.

“Forensic examinations have taken place and CCTV in the area is being collated and analysed.
“If you witnessed the incident, possibly drove past at around 4.30am on Wednesday, or you may know who was involved, please get in touch straight away.”
The men appear to be white with the one on foot described as having facial stubble or a short beard, and wearing a dark puffa jacket with some sort of hi-viz over the top.
Firefighters from York and Acomb responded to reports of smoke coming out of the shop.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “On arrival this was confirmed by the police to be from a smoke cloak which had activated.
“Crews gained entry to the property for the police and then ventilated it using a positive pressure ventilation fan and the incident was left in the hands of the police.”
