Popular York café is gutted following closure

Workers have moved in to gut what was a popular York café in the city centre.

They have removed most of the fixtures and fittings from The Block, the pizza place on Goodramgate.

It opened in 2018 in the unit formerly occupied by the Travelling Man shop.

Former professional golfer Scott Brannan turned it into a modern pizzeria, with wooden bar, tiled walls and a huge picture of The Clash on their visit to York in 1985.

It served pizza by the slice bar, offering meat, vegetarian and vegan options, and earned a 4.9/5 rating on Tripadvisor thanks to many rave reviews.

But The Block closed at the end of December. At the time, Scott said: “This is due to a number of reasons which I won’t bore you all with.

“Nothing negative, the decision has been made for positive reasons such as having more time to do the things I want and spend time with the people I care about.

“I’ve loved this place and have loved making it what it’s become. It’s come a long way from an empty space in 2018. I can’t thank people enough for supporting me and helping me create The Block as it stands today.”

There’s no information as yet as to what may be coming next.
