Polls open in crucial York by-election

Polls are open in Heworth today (Thursday) to vote in a City of York Council by-election.

Polls for the by-election opened at 7am and close at 10pm.

Candidates representing Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the Conservatives, Greens and Reform UK are standing, along with an independent.

The election was called in December after incumbent Labour councillor Ben Burton announced he was standing down and leaving York for work.

The candidates standing for election:

  • Anna Perrett, Labour.
  • Ben Ffrench, Green.
  • Emma Dolben, Conservative.
  • Emma Hardy, independent.
  • Ian Eiloart, Liberal Democrats.
  • John Crispin-Bailey, Reform.

  • Bell Farm Social Hall, 27 Roche Avenue, York, YO31 9BB
  • St Paulinus Church, The Church Room, Monkton Road, York, YO31 9AX
  • St Wulstan’s Church, Fossway, York, YO31 8SQ
  • The Avenues Children’s Centre, The Oak Room, Sixth Avenue, York, YO31 0UT
  • The Centre @ Burnholme, Explore York Library, Mossdale Avenue, YO31 0HA
  • St Aelred’s Community Centre, 216 Fifth Avenue, Tang Hall, YO31 0PN

Holy Trinity Church polling station is unavailable for this election and voters who typically cast ballots there should go to The Centre @ Burnholme, Explore York Library instead.

Voters are required to bring a valid, accepted form of ID in order to cast their ballots, with more information available here: https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections/voter-id?ref=ed_direct

People can take postal votes to polling stations to cast their ballots until 10pm on Thursday.

Those who have had a medical emergency, cannot vote due to work or whose IDs have been lost, stolen, damaged can appoint an emergency proxy until 5pm on polling day.
