Police warn against swimming at Haddlesey Lock

Police in Selby say they have recently had a number of reports about young people swimming at Haddlesey Lock, on the Aire and Calder Navigation (Selby Section), along with some concerns around behaviour.

They say they completely understand that everyone wants somewhere to cool off and have fun — however, this particular location can be very dangerous.

The water may look inviting, but there are hidden risks such as cold water shock, and unseen hazards.

Swimming here is also prohibited under Canal & River Trust bylaws.

Officers are working closely with partners including the Canal & River Trust, Fire & Rescue Service, and North Yorkshire Council to help keep people safe.

A spokesperson said: “We kindly ask parents and carers to have a chat with young people about the risks and to encourage safer places to spend time during the warm weather.

“Our aim is not to stop anyone enjoying themselves, but to make sure everyone gets home safely.

“Any anti-social behaviour reported will still be dealt with appropriately.”
