Police officer faces gross misconduct allegations over video and school incident

A North Yorkshire Police officer is to face a gross misconduct hearing over allegations including sharing video footage and accessing files inappropriately.

The hearing will take place next Tuesday (26 May) chaired by the Assistant Chief Constable Sarah Jackson.

The unnamed officer is alleged to have breached police standards of professional behaviour in relation to orders and instructions, confidentiality and discreditable conduct.

Four allegations have been put forward, all dating back to January 2024. They are:

  • That on 16 January 2024 at around 6pm-6.40pm ‘the officer’ showed Witness A’s daughter nine items of body worn video footage without any policing purpose, and the daughter was able to take a photograph and send it to another person
  • That on 16 January 2024 at around 6.40pm, ‘the officer’ accessed and viewed an incident relating to a report of violence at a local school, without any policing purpose
  • That on 1 January 2024, when on a planned rest day, ‘the officer’”’ accessed the NYEYE Detained Log without a policing purpose at around 8.15pm to 8.30pm
  • That on 2 January 2024 at when on a planned rest day, ‘the officer’ accessed the NYEYE Detained Log without a policing purpose at around 4.45pm to 5.30pm and around 6.50pm and 6.55pm.

The hearing notice states: “The above breaches the standards of professional behaviour and are so serious that individually and/or cumulatively amount to gross misconduct.”

It will take place at the North Yorkshire Police HQ in Northallerton.
