Police officer accused of failing to investigate serious sexual assault

A North Yorkshire Police officer is facing misconduct charges over his alleged failure to investigate reports of a serious sexual assault.

The behaviour of PC131 Adam Bray will be investigated at a hearing next month.

PC Bray faces a series of accusations dating back to 5 August 2022.

A notice of the misconduct hearing says it is alleged that “whilst attending a domestic incident PC Bray failed to respond to a complaint of a serious sexual offence; failed to listen to and/or act upon information relayed to him by the Force Control Room, the victim and the suspect and failed to inform supervisors of the alleged serious sexual offence.

“It is further alleged that PC Bray failed to listen to or have regard for the concerns of the victim in her report of a domestic incident and a serious sexual assault.

“PC Bray was dismissive of the victim’s concern for her safety and welfare as well as that of her young daughter. PC Bray failed to carry out the appropriate and necessary checks into the background of the suspect and failed to investigate the reported serious sexual offence.”

It is also alleged that, on the same day, “whilst attending a report of a vulnerable member of the public, PC Bray failed to carry out appropriate and relevant checks and failed to use his police powers to intervene in order to protect the male’s welfare”.

The misconduct hearing will have to decide if the allegations are proven, and if they amount to gross misconduct.

It will take place on 3 March at North Yorkshire Police’s Northallerton HQ.
