Police have issued a warning about flooding on the North Yorkshire coast.
In a message released at 12.46am today, they urged people to “please drive with extra caution”.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We’re experiencing flooding and road closures across the North Yorkshire coast due to severe weather. Conditions are hazardous, and some routes may be impassable.”
Affected areas include:
- A165 Lebberston to Filey (A1039 Roundabout) – flooding
- A1039 Muston, Filey – Car in water – knee-height water
- Duck Bridge, Danby – Car fully submerged in water (approx. 7ft of water)
- Whitby – Bennison lane near Guisborough Road – Flooding reported.
Firefighters were called to two flooding incidents on the coast last night. At 8.16am they went to Bank Close, Sleights, near Whitby after a blocked drain threatened to flood homes.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crew power was used to unblock drains and they also diverted the water away from threatened properties.”
And at 10.43pm, Whitby firefighters tackled a blocked culvert that had caused rainwater to overflow into a residential street on Linden Close, Ruswarp.
Police say: “Avoid driving through floodwater – it’s dangerous and can damage your vehicle.”
