Police deploy armed officers to busy locations to provide “reassurance to the public”

North Yorkshire Police say the public should not be concerned if they see armed police patrolling busy streets.

They are deployed at the Christmas markets, York Designer Outlet and at various other large events over the coming weeks.

These deployments happen every year in the run-up to the festive period and are in place, say North Yorkshire Police, to keep people safe and deter criminal activity which includes terrorism.

They say officers have an important job to do, but will be friendly and approachable and, where appropriate, happy to chat during their patrols.

If you notice anything that doesn’t feel right, speak to an officer or contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 or via their website for non-emergencies.

If a life is in danger, a crime is in action, or in emergency always dial 999.

Chief Inspector Mark Procter from the Firearms Support Unit said: “We’re pleased to welcome large festive events such as the York and Harrogate Christmas markets back to North Yorkshire.

“The deployments of our firearms officers are just one of a range of tactics we use to disrupt and deter criminal activity, including terrorism. We want to do all we can to ensure that people feel safe and are safe when out and about this Christmas.

“These deployments also provide reassurance to the public. I urge everyone to remain vigilant, if you see something that looks out of place, don’t delay, contact the police immediately.”
