Selby residents have been surprised to see banners appear in the town centre declaring ‘Make Selby Great Again’.
Two pictures of a red baseball cap bearing the slogan have appeared on an empty building on Gowthorpe.
And a banner with the same phrase is on another side of the structure.
“They appeared last night,” said one resident. “No one knows where they came from. But they seem to have gone to a lot of trouble.”
The images are a a clear homage to the Donald Trump slogan, ‘Make America Great Again’.
Mr Trump and many of his supporters wore red baseball caps with the phrase throughout his election campaign.
That turned into a triumph for the Republican Party when he was voted in for a second term as President of the USA this morning.
The Selby building where the signs appeared has been empty since Pocklington Carpets moved out in 2021.
It was sold for £280,000 to Swan Build Ltd, developers based in Goole, on 12 March 2021.
They have plans to demolish the 1950s building and build eight homes on the site. North Yorkshire Council has yet to rule on the planning application.
