Pictures: Demolition underway to clear room for York’s latest hotel

Work is now well underway to demolish a major office block in York city centre.

Much of the old Northern House building on Rougier Street has been torn down.

While the front of the seven-storey office block is still standing, albeit surrounded by scaffolding, most of the back is now rubble.

The demolition is to make way for York’s latest hotel.

Dakota Hotels, together with Evans Property Group, are creating a 140-bed hotel with bar and restaurant on the site.

Northern House, which used to be home to the offices of rail companies, was originally scheduled to go to make way for the Roman Quarter development.

This ambitious scheme, featuring a Roman museum called Eboracum, an 88-room aparthotel, 153 new apartments and office space, collapsed when the firm behind it went into administration.

The Dakota Hotel plan was approved last September. Construction was allowed on condition that archaeological monitoring took place.

This followed Historic England raising concerns about the impact of the new building on potentially significant Roman archaeological remains.

Dakota said the York hotel would be built in line with the industrial, warehouse style of other of its sites in places such as Leeds and Manchester.
