It’s often one of the busiest shifts of the year for firefighters – and this year’s Bonfire Night proved no exception.
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service was called out more than 20 times last night.
Eleven of these were to ‘controlled burnings’ as people created their own bonfires – including in Malton, Selby and York.
At 7.13pm, Acomb fire crew went to a report of a few small fires in the open “that had been seen on the CCTV of a commercial premises,” a fire service spokesperson said.
“This was found to be a controlled and attended burn. Crew gave advice to the responsible person.”
Three minutes later, two crews went to a fire in the yard of a commercial business in Acomb.
“The fire had been extinguished by members of the public prior to the arrival of the fire service using a hosepipe.”
Just before 8pm, York firefighters were called to a report of a bonfire on a public path. They put this out “and gave advice to local residents”.
Two boxes of fireworks were found smouldering near a public toilet in Scarborough at 8.38pm, which fire crews put out.
At 9.20pm, crews from Knaresborough and Acomb responded to a report of a bin on fire in a public area in York.
“The cause of the fire is believed to have been deliberate and the crews extinguished it using a bucket and a knapsack sprayer,” the spokesperson said.
An unattended and out-of-control in bonfire in Malton was extinguished at 9.20pm.
And at 5.40am this morning (Wednesday) put out an unattended bonfire on Scarborough beach.
We have had no reports of any fireworks night casualties at the time of publication.
