New snow warning for York – as train company says ‘check before you travel’

The Met Office has issued a new snow and ice weather warning that covers York and North Yorkshire.

While our patch might have escaped the worst of Storm Goretti, it could be subject to wintry conditions over the next 36 hours.

The yellow warning, which covers much of the north of England and Scotland, runs from midday today (Friday, 9 January) till 3pm tomorrow.

The Met Office says: “Wintry showers will bring some snow accumulations in places, with ice a more widespread risk, leading to some disruption.”

It says roads and railways could be affected, with longer journey times expected.

So far North Yorkshire has been unaffected by the storm that has wreaked havoc in some parts of the country.

Rail companies say they are closely monitoring the situation.

This is the advice from LNER: “You are strongly advised to check your journey in full on either of the affected days.

“There are currently no changes to the LNER timetable in reaction to Storm Goretti today, Friday 9 January.

“If you have been advised to not travel or defer travel by another train operator and have a LNER connecting service, you can use your original ticket up to and including Monday 12 January 2026.”

You can also claim a refund if you decided against travelling yesterday or today.
