New scout unit set up in York – with plans to go gliding and kayaking

A new scout unit in York is up and thriving.

The 1st York (Poppleton) Explorer Unit, for boys and girls aged 14 to 17, started in September and has already attracted 12 members.

They have already been skiing, helped run a local night hike and fundraised towards a community event which centred around pressing apples from local orchards.

Activities planned include a camp in early March, some navigation, and hiking and participating in the Fells Marathon.

The Fells Marathon is a two-day hike over 26 miles where scouts must carry all the equipment they will need for the weekend. Activities on their bucket list include gliding, parachuting, kayaking, and canoeing.

Scout Tilly said: “I like having the independence to plan and do different activities and make strong friendships.”

Adult volunteer Charles said: “We provide young people with opportunities to try new activities and to plan, organise and run most evenings.

“They will learn skills for life which will include leadership, teamwork, problem solving, social skills, confidence and responsibility.

“These skills will help them when they apply for university, employment, or apprenticeship.”

He added: “If adults want to volunteer to help with the unit, in any capacity, please get in touch.”
