New plans lodged for empty York store rejected as McDonald’s

Plans for works at a vacant Fulford Iceland have been lodged around a year after a bid to convert it to a McDonald’s was turned down.

Dalian Properties Ltd’s plans would see the building divided into three units with changes made to the outside.

The application stated the changes include new entrance and service doors, glazing and windows at the front and air conditioning units at the back of the building.

It comes after City of York Council planning officers refused McDonald’s application in October last year to convert the building into a restaurant and drive-thru.

The plans were blocked on public health grounds, with officers stating it was close to Danesgate Community school, Fulford School and York Steiner School.

They added the opening of a fast food restaurant there would undermine efforts to promote healthy lifestyles.

McDonald’s said at the time they remained committed to opening a new site in York and they would work with the community to find a suitable alternative location.

The fast food chain’s plans sparked a backlash from residents when they were lodged in April 2024, leading to concerns about a rise in congestion, noise and odours.

McDonald’s plans stated the conversion would improve the look of the building which has stood empty since October 2023 and create up to 45 jobs.
