New Alpine and German-style taproom is coming to York

A new Alpine and German-style taproom is coming to a York brewery as part of a newly-approved expansion.

Plans from Pivovar to expand its Elvington Brewery, where Mittel pilsner and lager is made, have been given the go ahead by City of York Council.

Council planning officers stated the expansion, which is set to include a kitchen and outside seating area, would create up to 16 extra jobs.

They added the development would not cause undue harm to people living nearby after two neighbouring households objected over noise from outside drinkers.

The development is set to see a two-storey extension built housing a taproom which would be a cross between a German beer hall and Alpine ski chalet.

A kitchen would also be created to serve food.

Production of drinks at the brewery, in Station Yard off York Road, will be showcased in the taproom.

The outside terrace is set to be covered by a timber pergola.

The taproom is set to open from 11am to 10pm from Sunday to Thursday and until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Planning conditions require the outside seating area to open at 11am and shut by 9pm daily.

A new bottling line is set to be created to help expand production so the business can cater for rising demand.

Paul Hawksworth, a director of Pivovar, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) in March 2025 the expansion of brewing operations aimed to take the firm’s beers beyond the North.

He added existing facilities could no longer keep up with demand and planned to bring in what he described as the Rolls Royce of brewing equipment to produce more.

The company first launched in 2003 as a beer importer and now brews its own Mittel range and runs 14 bars and restaurants across the UK, including four in York.

The director said: “We’ve grown and grown over the years and now we’re supplying 250 pubs, bars and restaurants around the North, from Whitley Bay to North Derbyshire.

“We’ve been developing our own lagers and we think we’ve cracked it with our flagship beer Mittel, but demand’s gone crazy.

“We’ve extended our existing brewery three times and we keep expanding, our fermenters are now outside because we don’t have any more space inside.

“So the time has come to expand in a big way, and this extension will allow us to quadruple our output.

“We’re currently open to the community by way of a small taproom, but now we need a proper tap room, it will have a cosy feel.”

Objections from two neighbouring homes claimed the development would result in the loss of green space and cause traffic and parking problems.

They also claimed the additional bottling could cause issues with water supplies and drainage.
