It’s not a footpath – Heritage rail line warns against trespass

The Wensleydale Railway, between Northallerton and Redmire, has issued a warning to keep off the track.

They say “We’re aware of some trespass incidents lately so would like to remind people that our railway track is not a public footpath.”

Even if no passenger trains are scheduled to operate, the railway line, which runs through Leeming Bar, Bedale and Leyburn, can still be in active use by engineering trains.

The warning continues: “Please don’t be tempted to take shortcuts. Stick to marked public footpaths and level crossings.”

It’s not the first time that dog walkers and ramblers have been an issue for the line. Use of it as an unofficial footpath was very common in the 90s and early 2000s as all traffic had ceased.

In 2004 it reopened as the Wensleydale Railway and there was a big publicity campaign to warn the public that regular trains would start operating again and they must keep away from it.
