Hundreds queue for York shop opening – complete with fizz and freebies

Hundreds of shoppers turned out for the opening of a store in York today (Thursday).

Savers, the health and beauty retailer, opened its new store at Odsal House on Front Street, Acomb this morning.

The store has moved into the former Farmfoods shop after vacating its smaller home next door.

There was a balloon archway leading into Savers, and free glasses of bubbly for early visitors.

Goody bags, worth more than £15, were given to the first 500 customers to make a purchase.

Queueing shoppers were serenaded by Britain’s Got Talent star Finley Barrett-Carter, who performed outside the store.

And York City FC’s mascot Yorkie the Lion was also there.

Managing director of Savers Health, Home & Beauty Doug Winchester told YorkMix: “It’s really great to see such a massive queue of customers coming out for the first opening day of our new store, which is just literally next door, but it feels like it’s world away in terms of what we can offer to the customer with the space, with a new fragrance offer.

“Over the years we’ve had really loyal customers, and what they’ve said to us is we wish you had a bigger shop. It was a very small shop.

“It’s really an investment in the community and the locality.”

He said the larger Savers had created more jobs.

“There’s a pride that you feel when you see people develop in themselves and become more and more confident.

“You know people who come in for Saturday jobs, and maybe they’re a bit shy, but they grow with the team. They nurture them, and, you know, they do a wonderful job.”
