York supermarket to reopen tomorrow after big upgrade

A supermarket in York will reopen tomorrow – after it closed for several weeks of renovation.

We reported at the end of May that Aldi in Fulford Road was closing its doors for expansion work to be carried out.

Six weeks later, the supermarket will be reopening its doors tomorrow, Thursday 9 July, and showcase its new look.

For the expansion, the shopping area has increased from 854sqm to 1,146sqm, with the overall footprint of the site increasing from 1,265sqm to 1,557sqm.

The number of parking spaces has fallen from 107 to 92, but the supermarket said the expansion should bring the shop into line with typical Aldi stores – ranging from 1,200sqm to 1,400sqm.

“Work to extend our Fulford Road store has been ongoing since January 2026, and has progressed well,” said an Aldi spokesperson.

“The store has been temporarily closed since 17th May, to complete the final stages of construction. We’re very excited to announce that work is almost complete, and we’re looking forward to welcoming our customers back to an improved store at Fulford Road on 9th July.”

The extension will now offer wider aisles, upgrades to the store appearance, investment in the heating and refrigeration systems to make the store more sustainable, as well as up to 10 new full-time equivalent jobs, with all existing jobs retained.

Customers can look forward to seeing the new and improved store from 8am tomorrow.
