Hundreds of vehicles are stuck as snow and ice bring treacherous conditions to the North York Moors this evening (Wednesday).
North Yorkshire Police have issued a ‘do not travel’ plea to anyone thinking of heading over the moors.
At 5.52pm, police issued this update: “The A169 between Whitby and Pickering is currently closed due to the heavy snow conditions. Motorists are advised to avoid the area until further notice.
Earlier, at 3.42pm, police posted: “Please avoid the A171 near Whitby and across the moors towards Guisborough – lots of vehicles are getting stuck due to the weather conditions.
“The A174 out of Whitby maybe passable at this time.
“If in any doubt, please don’t travel if you don’t need to. Stay safe out there.”
The North Yorkshire Weather Updates Facebook page said at 4.20pm: “Hundreds of vehicles currently stationary in snow on the A171 Birk Brow Guisborough to Whitby.”
One driver commented: “Drove back that way about an hour ago, was a nightmare – so relieved to get to the bottom of the hill without hitting anything! Cars everywhere.”
