Here’s how you can become a pig keeper for the day at York farm

Animal lovers are being given the chance to step into the wellies of a real farmer this summer – as York farm launch a brand new Pig Keeper Experience.

Monk Park Farm near Thirsk has unveiled its latest hands-on animal experience, offering guests the opportunity to go behind the scenes and discover what it really takes to care for some of the farm’s most popular residents.

During the one-hour private experience, participants will work alongside one of Monk Park Farm’s experienced farmers, learning about the daily care, feeding and welfare of the farm’s pigs and piglets.

Guests will begin with a safety briefing before heading into the pig pens to help prepare feeds, create enrichment activities and make tasty treats designed to keep the pigs active, healthy and entertained.

The experience also provides a genuine insight into life as a pig keeper, with participants helping to muck out pens, lay fresh bedding and assist with day-to-day husbandry tasks.

Once the work is complete, guests can enjoy spending quality time with the pigs themselves. From feeding treats and brushing coats to giving belly scratches and helping apply skin oils, visitors will have plenty of opportunities to get up close to the animals while learning about their unique personalities.

Natalie Fennell, events administrator at Monk Park Farm, said: “Pigs are often one of the most misunderstood animals on the farm, but they’re incredibly intelligent, curious and affectionate.

“This experience gives guests a chance to see first-hand just how much care goes into looking after them, while also creating some really special memories with the animals.”

The Pig Keeper Experience includes full-day admission to Monk Park Farm, allowing guests to enjoy all of the farm’s attractions and activities before or after their experience.

The launch follows a series of successful animal encounters at the farm and forms part of Monk Park Farm’s continued investment in providing unique, educational and interactive experiences for visitors.

Places are limited to ensure a personal and hands-on experience, and advance booking is essential.
