Two fire crews were called to a home in Whitby after reports of a smell of burning from one of the bedrooms.
They went to the home in multiple occupancy at midnight.
Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and carried a hose in order to inspect the room.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The cause of the smoke was found to be a mobile phone that had been tampered with and subsequently exploded.
“The crew removed the phone and then used a positive pressure ventilation fan to help get rid of the smell caused by the phone.”
