Fire-starting tortoise rescued from blaze near York

A fire-starting tortoise was rescued from a home near York last night (Friday).

Firefighters from Malton and York were called to the incident at Bulmer near Castle Howard at 4.58pm.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The fire was caused by a pet tortoise knocking over the heat lamp in its enclosure.

“The lamp fell into sawdust and this smoldered creating a lot of smoke.

“Crews extinguished the fire and rescued the tortoise and two Jack Russell dogs. Minor fire damage to enclosure only.”
