‘Learner driver’ who reached speeds of 107mph on North Yorkshire roads banned

A persistent speeder on North Yorkshire’s roads has been banned from driving after a court heard he reached speeds of 107mph.

Darren Harris, 33 of Clarendon Road, Thornaby in Stockton-on-Tees was found guilty in his absence of speeding on three occasions in the Hambleton area.

He was first clocked by speed cameras travelling at 91mph in a 70mph limit on 9 July last year.

Then on 14 September he was caught doing 84mph in a 70 zone.

Both times he failed to respond to speeding notices sent to him through the post.

Then on 9 October, Harris drove at speeds of 107mph in a 70mph zone. Due to the dangerously high speed, North Yorkshire Police stopped him.

Further checks showed that Harris was a provisional licence holder – legally still a learner driver. However, the vehicle was not displaying learner plates and Harris was unsupervised in the vehicle.

Harris was found guilty in his absence of speeding on three occasions and of a licence offence at Harrogate Magistrates Court on 13 January.

He was disqualified from driving for two years, fined £770 and ordered to pay costs of £120.

Police traffic bureau manager Richard Fletcher said: “Harris showed a total disregard for the safety of himself and other road users by regularly driving at excess speed.

“These actions were further exacerbated by the fact that Harris did not have the appropriate permissions on his licence to drive unsupervised.

“I would like to thank the officers involved for their enquiries in identifying the driver and the swift actions taken to stop the vehicle and deal with the driver for the multiple offences.

“This is a prime example of how joint working between departments can ensure that repeat offenders are robustly dealt with.”
