We know that on warmer days open water, such as rivers, lakes and the coast, can look like a tempting place to cool off, but it is full of hidden dangers.
Outdoor water is often much colder than it looks and conditions can change very quickly, with tides, waves and currents catching even experienced swimmers off guard.
Hidden rocks, vegetation and the water temperature aren’t easy to spot and can impact your ability to swim.
Incidents around water can happen in seconds.
Always be aware of your surroundings, look out for warning signs and safety equipment, and think twice before getting too close to the edge.
In an emergency, call 999 immediately and ask for the fire service if inland and the Coastguard if you are at the coast.
Never enter the water to attempt a rescue. Tell the person to float on their back and look around and see if there’s any rescue equipment nearby that you can throw to the person.
Anything that floats can help keep heads above the surface.
