Disruption to services on two scenic railway lines in North Yorkshire

Two of the most scenic rail routes in North Yorkshire have been disrupted by engineering work and the collapse of a wall.

Services on the Settle to Carlisle line have been affected by urgent repairs to the railway.

Network Rail staff are on site and expect repairs to take until at least the end of service tomorrow (Wednesday 25 February)

Throughout the remainder of today, trains will have to run at a reduced speed between Skipton and Appleby in both directions and may be delayed.

Some services will run later than usual.

Tomorrow, Wednesday 25 February, trains will be unable to run between Garsdale and Kirkby Stephen in both directions.

They will run between Skipton and Garsdale, and between Kirkby Stephen and Carlisle.

For Wednesday 25 February, road transport has been requested to operate between Skipton and Appleby, and also between Settle and Carlisle.

Northern services between Skipton and Morecambe / Lancaster are not affected.

Engineering work is taking place at Nunthorpe, between Middlesbrough and Battersby, closing all lines.

Buses will replace trains between Middlesbrough and Whitby up to and including Friday 27 February.

A full renewal of Nunthorpe level crossing is required in order to enhance safety for pedestrians, motorists and rail passengers. The upgrade will see the life-expired crossing replaced by Network Rail.

A new sliding barrier will be installed, with a modern operating system added and the road resurfaced with a new layout.

The changes will provide rail passengers with more reliable journeys as well as giving road users a smoother ride over the crossing surface.

Replacement vehicles may be busier than usual, and you should allow extra time for your journey.
